Here in Texas, we love the summertime! School is out! That means free time for swimming, cookouts, live outdoor concerts, and so many other fun activities. But one activity that is super common during this time is moving. I know. Why the heck would you move in the Texas heat? Well, it’s just the easiest time to do it with everyone having a lot more free time!
When I think about moving or helping someone move, I’m not the most excited about it. What is the hardest part about the moving process? Is it packing? Finding people to help you move? Cleaning your last place after you move? Unpacking? Whether you are a family moving into your new home, a college student moving into their first apartment, or just a couple moving into a new space, these tips are great to use when preparing for your move.
Start packing at least a month to two months ahead of your move-out/move-in date.
Packing well in advance is the major key to having a smooth time when moving. Moving is already a stressful process, but if you can make it a little less stressful by packing in advance. Start with the items you rarely use, like in your garage (some of those items might already be in boxes). As you get closer to your moving day, slowly pack up your frequently used items.

Have a cleaning plan ready.
No one wants to move into a dirty home. I mean, come on. Did you move into a dirty space during your time there? Maybe, maybe not. Cleaning up your home or apartment is also a way to receive your deposit back. If you can afford it, hire a cleaning service to clean out your home after you move out. Also, unplug your refrigerator at least a day or two before moving day. Rule of thumb: If you are moving into an apartment, always take pictures of the unit BEFORE moving your boxes in. Take videos too! It is crucial to have concrete evidence to hold the apartment complex accountable so you can get your deposit back and not lose it!
Pack smart.
You know the saying “work smarter, not harder?” Well, it applies here too!
- For clothing, keep items in the dresser. You can also place a trash bag over your clothes with hangers. This is much easier than taking them off the hanger, folding them, unfolding, and hanging them in your new closet. Simply bag your clothes with the hangers still on and hang them back in the closet once you move. Here’s a video that can help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=libLxQDpsUA
- Get rid of any items that you no longer use or wear. You can host a garage sale or simply donate them.
- Don’t pay for boxes! Go to a local department store, grocery store, or even a liquor store and ask for boxes.
- Use your blankets, linens, and towels as buffers to wrap around your fragile items
- Label all your boxes and make sure it is written on all sides of the box.
- Pack your cables and cords neatly. Wrap them so they won’t get tangled!
Notify the post office, utilities, internet service provider, doctors, etc of your change of address.
You can go online, call, or physically go to any of these places to let them know that you are moving. Make sure that all mail is forwarded to your new address. Also contact your insurance companies, doctor’s offices, and bank(s) of your address change.
Hydrate and stretch the day before you move.
I cannot stress this enough. If you are in Texas or anywhere that gets super hot, PLEASE hydrate and stretch. This is so important. Too many times I have seen friends pass out or pull a muscle due to lack of hydration and no stretching. Moving IS work! It is exercise. If you are not using a moving service, then you are for sure doing a strenuous workout. Also, be sure to stretch and hydrate after you move too.
Moving may not be fun and exciting. But at least it won’t be stressful if you use some of these tips on your next move!
These are very helpful! I typically move a lot (don’t judge me lol) and three months ago when I moved to my current place, I made sure I used a moving company, I was not about to do any heavy lifting!
Moving companies are the way to go honestly!!!
